NaoisNow “Tuesday Tunes” | DJ 2-Tone Jones - High Priestess of Chessboxin’ | 03.08.2011
This week for “Tuesday Tunes”, we bring you a exclusive premiere of a joint off the upcoming Shaolin Jazz - The 37th Chamber project. For those unfamiliar with the project, check out this anecdote from one of the project’s co-creators, Gerald Watson:
For each of The Classics exhibitions I enlisted the services of DJ 2-Tone Jones who created a mixtape that features music from that genre.
For JAZZ, since its the last of my Album Cover Art Exhibitions, I wanted to do some different things and the mixtape was one of them – enter SHAOLIN JAZZ – The 37th Chamber.
The idea stemmed from my interview of graphic designer Logan Walters who created a series of jazz inspired Wu-Tang album covers, dubbed Wu-Note. One of my questions references the Beatles x Wu-Tang mixtape, which he created the album cover art for, and my line of questioning sorta asks him about a jazz x Wu-Tang mix project, which he goes to say that he’d be down to create the cover art for if one exists.
After receiving that info I hit up 2-Tone – he’s down, then I go back to Logan – he’s down, and SHAOLIN JAZZ is born.
The full length project will be available on 04.11.2011. If you are in the DC area be sure to check “The 37th Chamber - DC Listening Party” on Saturday March 26th at Palace 5ive (2216 & 2220 14th St. NW) from 9pm-11pm. There will be live art by Aniekan Udofia & complimentary beverages courtesy of vitamin water and Heineken (21 & Over).
The other night when I was on John Everhart’s Newtown Radio show, he shared a story that Bob Nastanovich had told him in an interview a while back. I’m going to share it with you here, and you can pass it along like folklore. You know, the oral tradition. Bob Nastanovich should be a kind of folk…
We’re excited to release a new shirt, our travel-themed AWH Globetrotter tee! Less work, more travel- that’s how we see it. Now available in the gift shop.
ALSO - We still have some Moose tees tromping around the shop- now at a lower price of just $23, grab em before they all migrate.
Packaging for Super Mario Collection (Japanese re-release of Mario All-Stars), and a new King of Games shirt commemorating the plumber’s 25th anniversary.
Club Nintendo is giving away the limited edition shirt and several other themed items (tote bags, playing cards) in a drawing — all you need to do to enter is buy a Mario game for the DS or Wii in Japan.
This is all part of a new 25th Anniversary campaign Nintendo announced tonight along with the launch of a special Japanese website for the promotion. Definitely check out the videos; I’ll be sure to share the wayyy neat commercial here as soon as it shows up on Youtube.
There’s also an Iwata Asks-style interview between Mario’s father Shigeru Miyamoto and Mother’s, um, mother Shigesato Itoi. It’s a shame JC isn’t around to help me translate some bits from the Q&A. Itoi is like the coolest Asian guy ever. I hope I’m half as awesome as him when I’m in my 60s — or 30s even.
